NB residents upset with most recent sewer rate increase
Posting Date: 05/05/2014

Customers of the Village of North Baltimore Water and Sewer Treatment system are suffering sticker shock with the current month's billing. Sewer rates have jumped considerable, as the village needs to pay for the debt incurred for Phase 2 of the EPA mandated sewer separation project.

Effective with the April billing (received last week), the minimum billing for sewer service increased $5.25 per month.

In addtion, rates will increase for water use over 2,000 gallons per month. This amount will increase a minimum of $4.36 per month. Some residents are reporting very large increases, in the neighborhood of $20 per month or more.

The cost of Phase 2 was $6.3 million, which connected the northern portions of the village to the new sanitary sewer system.

So make the residents pick up the tab, how nice. No wonder no new industry or residents are moving here. Smooth may have the same idea as others. Sad the residents are being stuck with the bill for this. Folks it may be time to join the Northwestern Water and Sewer District to lower our bills in town, as others towns have gone down after joining.

The biggest thing i'm upset with is that the contractors have not came back to smooth the dirt down and plant grass seed in the area of my yard in which they tore up. I have no problem doing it but i paid for it. The village said that the contractors are responsible for doing it but of course i didn't get very far with the village office. We all know how that goes. I will gladly replant the grass seed and rake the dirt down but i'm paying for this whole sewer work to be done so the contractor should be the ones doing it. And the water rates were the biggest downfall to buying a house in NB.HOW ABOUT YOU DON'T RAISE MY WATER BILL UNTIL ALL THE WORK IS COMPLETE ON PROPERTY!!!!When i tell people how much we pay they are speechless. Never has anyone heard of paying so much for a water bill.

I have had the same problem as Trent in regards to finishing what was started. And I am beginning to think with all the increases in water and sewer bills and paying for other work that the village is making money off this whole sewer deal. I would love to sell my house and get out of hear, but no one wants to move here.

Gleaned from the Ohio EPA website by yours truly: The 2012 average annual residential sewer rate in Ohio was $581 per year. The 2012 average annual residential water rate in Ohio was $547. That would be $1128 per year / 12 months in a year = $94 per month for water AND sewer. Our water/sewer rates were not that high in 2012. But it looks like we are there now, with the recent rate increases. So, I am not sure where folks are living that, as some say, is so much cheaper than NB. Sure there ARE exceptions and some of them are close by. But if they have not yet completed the EPA sanitary sewer mandates, then you are not comparing apples to apples. In addition, going with Northwest Water/Sewer likely WILL NOT lower our rates, they will be taking on the same debt that we have now. In addition, we lose local service. Maybe if a council some years ago joined NWWS... but now it appears to be too late. There will be something to be said for having our two reservoirs capacity in the coming years. Then maybe NWWS will come to us??? In the meantime, NB needs to recruit water customers! And how do we do that with our "high" rates? There ARE places in the country where these costs are $150 - $300 per month! We better go after them!

SO TRUE Trent & Chad Helms needs to stay in 1 spot and or section of town and complete the entire project and then move on. The town roads where they are working are sloppy and a mess! Stone and mulch all over in the grass areas where trees were standing tall. What a mess.
