North Baltimore High School Principal, Dr. Robert Falkenstein delivered an address to the NBHS Class of 2014 that includes multiple hash tags.
But now it’s time for some stories.
Let’s go through a journey about the Class of 2014 as we talk about values. Or should I say, #hashtag values? Everything today is #hashtag this and #hashtag that. For those unaware, a hashtag symbol is used on Twitter and Instagram and identifies the message topics. A hashtag term can be used as a search tool to look at similar “TWEETS”. Now for you older people out there, it’s the same symbol as the ‘pound sign’ on a rotary phone. “Oh my, several people understood that!” #so1900s. And some of these students tease me for my use of Twitter. For example at #Prom2k14, someone during the senior picture yelled out to “stand still so Falkenstein can tweet!” #funny, #soreal.
You have all learned some of the same and also very different #values at home. But how and when do we learn our values inside the school setting? Allow me to provide some examples from our seniors. #getready
Think back to middle school. #why, #sorry Do you remember playing the Nervous Game? YOU remember! #tryingtoforget. It was the game that taught you how to respect the space of others and keep your hands to yourselves! #awkward #whybringupthepast?
New Value. Let’s talk about honesty through Becca Adkins. I busted Becca in middle school for shooting spitwads in class. AT a substitute teacher! #classic. You know how she got busted? She turned herself in! #noway #yesway. Now here she is, fresh off of being voted #PromQueen, and ready to take on the world. And honest? We all know that Becca is honest!
Now the value of Passion. I watched as an emotional Morgan Schloemp teared up prior to her final basketball game—a real testament to her passion as a tiger athlete. #relatable
We all watch every day as Gabe walks around the school with a huge grin on his face!—What a guy. Gabe taught us the value of enjoying life. (sing) #becauseI’mHap-py #danceintheskinyou’rein!
And many of us are “good morning’ed” every day by Bryan Cotterman, #earlytoschool #Idon’tgetit who often holds the door for arriving staff members. Bryan shows us the value of care. And Bryan, I KNOW you will be teaching a lot of people a lot of things for the rest of your life. #genuine
I myself have enjoyed watching one particular student grow up and change in the last few years. So to you, Walter Young, I want you to know that I learned a lesson through you about integrity and self-respect. #thanksforthat
These seniors have a huge part to play in why I brought in a Bring Your Own Device Policy. It is part of the legacy of the Class of #2K14. I think that we have learned to trust one another and give over some control to other people rather than holding it ourselves. I believe through #BYOD we have all had a lesson in character—or doing the right thing even when we could have done the wrong thing and never gotten caught. #nbtigers, #values
The value of Determination. Many of us watched as these seniors and their respective teams…BEAT ELMWOOD IN FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL! #WHOOPWHOOP, #ELM-WHAT? #EPIC #Irreversible #SorryMrs.Garner
Zach Stewart #shootsomething is a prime example of the value of strength and stick-to-itiveness. His conduct on the football field is worthy of honor. #manofsteel
Tyler Reed is headed to my undergraduate alma mater #OU #OHYEAH!
In a few years you may hear about Logan Carles and his awesome ambitions as a drummer #futureSTREETname.
We are graduating 3 guys named “Austin” in a row today. We have Austin Ickes #conquerandovercome, Austin Kepling #Reachforthestars, and also Austin Lemley #original #Ireallycanhearyou.
Then there is Robert Lyberg #yourguessisasgoodasmine!
But back to Values. The value of #Service. Through the efforts of Miss Lauer, senior English Teacher, these students were required to complete community service hours. To name just a few examples, these seniors contributed to Project Angel Tree, the Soup Kitchen, serving at athletic events, Blood drive, working on teacher gifts, camp counselors, Teddy’s rescue, Eagle Scouts, and serving in local churches. #busy. Ladies and gentlemen: I am quite proud to say that these seniors completed 2006 and one half hours of community service this year. The class of 2014 values service and sacrifice. #clapclap
And I watched on May 2 as our Band seniors organized a special event for another band senior who found out on the day before Prom that medical reasons would prevent him from attending. The band held an 8th period prom so that the student would feel included and valued. So through our Band, we experienced the value of dignity #othersbeforeself
In conclusion, in 2008, these students arrived over at the former Main Building in the 7th grade. That was my first year as Principal here. #memories, #hot, #whenMrDanielswasyoung #whenmrbrozhadhair.
To the grads Doctor Bob added: I have enjoyed our time together. Watching you change from age 11 to 18—from youngsters through #alumni-- has been interesting and always exciting. In the end I can honestly say, I will never, ever forget you. #Imeanit #Truedat #CONGRATULATIONS!
