Latta Leads Letter Stressing Importance of Toledo Express TRACON to 180th Fighter Wing
Posting Date: 09/27/2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) this week led a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding the possible relocation of the Toledo Express Airport’s Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and the negative impacts it could have on the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing’s ability to carry out its mission.

Latta was joined on the letter by Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Congressman Jordan (R-OH) and Congresswoman Kaptur (D-OH).

“The Ohio National Guard 180th Fighter Wing serves an invaluable role in protecting our national security,” said Latta. “While modernizing our National Airspace System is a top priority, keeping TRACON at the Toledo Express Airport is essential to the 180th’s continued success. It is important that the FAA consider the negative impacts relocating TRACON could have on our national security as it makes decisions to improve the safety and efficiency of future air travel.”

The letter stresses that relocation could hinder the 180th Fighter Wing’s ability to carry out its Aerospace Control Alert (ACA) mission, as experienced controllers would be replaced with controllers who have little-to-no familiarity with the processes and procedures used in launching ACA F-16 aircraft. It also highlights the geographic limitations that would result and the importance of face-to-face communication in ensuring the success of critical defense missions.

A copy of the letter can be found here.
